IHG says a booked Reward Night locks in its points requirement. If a lower rate later appears, the way to obtain it is to cancel the existing reservation and try to rebook. Its FAQ warns that reward availability can disappear before the new booking is completed.
That makes repricing a decision about both price and a room you already hold. A lower number on a search page is not a new confirmation. Compare the potential saving with the risk of losing a suitable hotel on dates that may be hard to replace.
Compare the same stay
Search the full dates, room type and guest count. Check whether the new result has the same cancellation terms and remaining cash charges. A lower average points figure for a different room or shorter stay is not a like-for-like saving.
Our IHG remaining-charge guide helps keep the cash bill visible. The fourth-night card-benefit guide explains why the full reservation matters for another booking calculation. Do not reduce either comparison to one nightly result.
Put the cancellation deadline beside the saving
Read the current confirmation before taking any action. Record the actual deadline, penalty and payment treatment. A reward reservation should not be assumed to have free cancellation merely because the room was paid with points.
If Points & Cash funded the stay, the Points & Cash cancellation guide explains why returned value is not simply a cash refund. Keep the returned points and any remaining penalty in the same calculation as the proposed saving.
For a hypothetical reservation priced at 90,000 points, a comparable new result at 80,000 suggests a 10,000-point saving. It does not establish that the room will be available after cancellation or that the old booking has no penalty. Those are separate facts to check.
Preserve a usable alternative
Identify another hotel you could accept at a price you can afford. Consider location, occupancy and transport rather than just another points number. If the original reservation is the only workable room for an important trip, that fact belongs in the decision.
Use Lounge Frog’s airport directory and Cruise Frog’s port directory to keep the hotel connected to the route. Losing a room near the right terminal can produce a transport cost that reduces a nominal points saving.
The Marriott repricing guide provides a comparison for another program. It should not be used as IHG's procedure. Each program and reservation needs its own current rules.
Keep the booking tools separate
A points balance, an annual free night and a suite-upgrade award have different terms. The annual-free-night guide and suite-upgrade guide can help identify those distinctions. A lower Reward Night quote does not prove that every attached award will survive a cancellation and new booking unchanged.
Ask IHG about any linked benefit central to the stay before proceeding. Save the answer along with the existing confirmation. Do not treat an assumed restoration of a certificate or upgrade as part of the saving.
Confirm the result
If you decide to change the booking, retain the cancellation confirmation, new room confirmation and updated payment details. Check the dates and occupants again. A canceled reservation plus a larger points balance is not the same outcome as a successfully repriced stay.
Use Points Frog’s program directory when comparing the currencies for the wider journey. A useful repricing keeps a suitable room and improves the real booking cost. When availability or terms make the trade poor, keeping the confirmed reservation can also be a sensible choice.
