How do you convert a salary to an hourly wage?
Divide the yearly salary by the hours you're paid for in a year: 2,080 for a full-time job of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. To go from hourly to yearly, multiply by 2,080: $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. For a quick estimate, halve the salary and drop the thousands ($60,000 is about $30 an hour), or double the wage and add three zeros ($25 an hour is about $50,000 a year).
The calculator does the same with your own hours and weeks. Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay are the year's pay divided by 52, 26, 24 and 12, and a day is a fifth of a week.

What is the federal minimum wage per year?
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, unchanged since July 24, 2009, which comes to $15,080 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or $290 a week. 30 states and the District of Columbia set higher minimums: Washington's is $17.13 an hour ($35,630 a year full time) and DC's $18.40 ($38,272). In New York and Oregon the state rate depends on the region.
| Where | Hourly | Weekly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal minimum | $7.25 | $290 | $15,080 |
| District of Columbia | $18.40 | $736 | $38,272 |
| Washington | $17.13 | $685 | $35,630 |
| New York City, Long Island and Westchester | $17.00 | $680 | $35,360 |
| Connecticut | $16.94 | $678 | $35,235 |
| California | $16.90 | $676 | $35,152 |
How does overtime change hourly pay?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covered hourly workers earn at least time and a half, 1.5 times their regular rate, for every hour over 40 in a workweek. At $20 an hour, a 45-hour week pays $950: $800 for the first 40 hours and $150 for 5 hours at $30. That's $49,400 a year instead of $41,600. Hours can't be averaged over two weeks, and federal law doesn't require extra pay for weekends or holidays as such (DOL Fact Sheet #23). Some states add daily overtime: California pays time and a half past 8 hours in a workday.
| Hours a week | Weekly at $20 | Weekly at $25 | Yearly at $20 | Yearly at $25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | $800 | $1,000 | $41,600 | $52,000 |
| 45 (5 overtime) | $950 | $1,188 | $49,400 | $61,750 |
| 50 (10 overtime) | $1,100 | $1,375 | $57,200 | $71,500 |
| 55 (15 overtime) | $1,250 | $1,563 | $65,000 | $81,250 |
| 60 (20 overtime) | $1,400 | $1,750 | $72,800 | $91,000 |
Salaried workers don't get overtime by default, so longer hours lower a salary's hourly rate. But those paid under $684 a week ($35,568 a year) are generally owed it (DOL Fact Sheet #17A).
Why is a work year 2,080 hours?
Because 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. It counts paid holidays and vacation as paid hours, and it's the work year the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to turn hourly wages into yearly ones. A calendar year is 52 weeks and a day or two, so the federal government figures its employees' hourly rates over 2,087 hours instead, which makes $60,000 come to $28.75 an hour. Work fewer or more hours and the same salary is worth more or less an hour:
| Hours a week | Hours a year | Per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 1,040 | $57.69 |
| 30 | 1,560 | $38.46 |
| 35 | 1,820 | $32.97 |
| 37.5 | 1,950 | $30.77 |
| 40 | 2,080 | $28.85 |
| 45 | 2,340 | $25.64 |
| 50 | 2,600 | $23.08 |
| 60 | 3,120 | $19.23 |
What's the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year; semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 paychecks. On $60,000 a year, a biweekly paycheck is $2,308 and a semimonthly one $2,500 before taxes. Biweekly is the most common: 43% of private establishments paid that way in February 2023, according to the BLS.
| Pay period | Paychecks a year | Each paycheck | Private establishments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,154 | 27% |
| Biweekly | 26 | $2,308 | 43% |
| Semimonthly | 24 | $2,500 | 19.8% |
| Monthly | 12 | $5,000 | 10.3% |
Now and then a biweekly schedule fits 27 paydays into a calendar year: 26 two-week periods are 364 days, so it happens when the first payday falls on January 1 (or January 2 in a leap year). Ask your employer how it splits a salary that year.
What is the average hourly wage in the US?
$37.81 an hour for employees on private nonfarm payrolls in September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over an average workweek of 34.4 hours. The median is lower: full-time wage and salary workers' median weekly earnings were $1,251 in the second quarter of 2026, about $31.28 an hour over 40 hours, or $65,052 a year. To see how your own pay compares with people your age, in the US or your state, use the income percentile calculator.
How the calculator works
- From a salary: the hourly rate is the salary divided by your hours a week times your paid weeks a year. Salaries don't earn overtime here, so hours past 40 lower the rate.
- From an hourly wage: a week's pay is the wage times your hours, with hours past 40 at 1.5 times the wage unless you switch overtime off. A year is that week times your paid weeks.
- Paid weeks include paid vacation and holidays. Fewer paid weeks, as in seasonal or school-year work, spread a salary over fewer hours.
- Unpaid days come off the year at a day's pay, a fifth of a full week's.
- Pay periods: weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay are the year's pay over 52, 26, 24 and 12. Switching between salary and hourly keeps the same year's pay.
