Wyndham Go Free: compare the hotel tier with the cash bill

Three main hotel reward tiers make the math approachable, but the useful saving depends on the room you would actually buy.

Loyalty programs · By Points Frog Editorial ·

Wyndham Go Free hotel rewards use three standard point levels: 7,500, 15,000 and 30,000 per night at participating hotels. A lower tier is not automatically a better deal. The cash price, location and room suitability decide how useful the reward is for your trip.

Price a stay you would take anyway

Start with the hotel you would reasonably choose without points. Check its current reward tier and availability for your dates. A room available for cash may not be available as a reward. Different property types have separate rules, so do not apply the hotel chart to every rental or resort listing.

Write down the full cash price and the remaining charges on the award. Then compare the same room for the same number of guests. A low point price can lose its appeal if the hotel adds a costly drive or requires a second room for your party.

Use the tier as a starting point

Imagine a hypothetical eligible room costs 15,000 points or $180 including the charges you would otherwise pay. If the award has no remaining charge from that comparison, the points replace $180, or 1.2 cents per point. A 7,500-point room replacing a $60 purchase gives 0.8 cents per point instead.

The cheaper tier uses fewer points, but the first booking replaces more cash per point. Neither calculation proves a universal value for Wyndham points. They describe two possible purchases and the prices shown for them.

For a road trip, look at the next night's options before spending the entire balance. The reward that looks merely average today could preserve cash on an expensive stop tomorrow. Also consider arrival time and parking. A room near the route can be more useful than a higher cash-price property that requires a detour.

Keep the final reservation details, including occupancy and cancellation terms. The most valuable tier is the one that solves an accommodation need at a cost you can justify.

A practical way to decide

Start with a room or flight you would be happy to buy with cash. Match the dates, traveler count and cancellation terms before comparing prices. A cheaper award that changes your plans is a different product. Give that change a cost instead of treating it as a free improvement.

For a points comparison, subtract the award's cash charges from the cash price you would otherwise pay. Divide that saving by the points used. This gives a useful measure of the booking in front of you. It is not a promise about what the same points will buy next month. Compare the result with the next realistic use of your balance.
