A Wyndham Go Free reservation is not automatically refundable until arrival. The relevant cancellation policy controls whether the reward can be canceled without losing the points. The validity of the redeemed points is a second check, especially when an older balance is used.
Save the deadline at booking
For participating hotel Go Free rewards, the terms set a cancellation cutoff no later than 4 p.m. the day before check-in in the hotel's time zone, or the property's earlier deadline. Other property types have separate rules. Read the actual policy shown before confirming.
A reminder in your home time zone should reflect the hotel's local time. This matters on an international trip or when your flight departs close to the cutoff. Keep the confirmation rather than relying on a general description of rewards as flexible.
Cancellation can expose an old balance
Suppose a traveler uses points shortly before those points expire. The stay is months away, and the booking allows cancellation under its conditions. If the trip changes after the points' expiry date, cancellation does not necessarily produce points that can be used again.
That possibility changes the value of holding a speculative booking. It may reserve a room, but it does not erase the original point deadline. Ask the program to clarify the treatment of expiring points before making a reservation you are unlikely to keep.
There is also a practical difference between changing dates and canceling outright. Check the revised reward price, availability and point validity before giving up an existing room. A new search result can disappear before the replacement reservation is complete.
When canceling, keep the cancellation number and watch the account for the returned balance where the rules allow it. If expected points do not return, provide the original reservation and cancellation records to member services. A clear paper trail makes it easier to distinguish a processing issue from a restriction in the award's terms.
A practical way to decide
An expiry review works best as a small calendar task. Record the date shown in the account, the action required to extend or use the balance, and the time it may take to post. Set your reminder early enough to deal with a missing credit. A receipt proves you made a purchase; it may not prove the program has credited the points.
Do not spend more than the balance is useful to save. First identify a reward you would use, then compare the cost of preserving the account with that reward's practical value. Small balances can still be handy, but a new trip or an unnecessary purchase can cost more than the points it protects.
