Marriott’s fifth-night benefit removes the lowest-priced night

Stay for 5, Pay for 4 uses the lowest point-price night in an eligible reservation, which may not be the last night.

Loyalty programs · By Points Frog Editorial ·

Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 benefit removes the lowest point-price night from an eligible five-night award reservation. It is not a promise to make the fifth calendar night free. That distinction matters when reward prices vary across a weekend or event period.

Keep the stay in one eligible reservation

Marriott's help page describes five consecutive nights using points for eligible standard redemptions or PointSavers under one confirmation number. Several back-to-back bookings are not automatically treated as the same reservation for this benefit.

Free-night certificates and Cash + Points are not a way to fill the fifth night while keeping the benefit unchanged. Premium-room upgrade costs have their own rules. Search the entire stay and read the final point breakdown instead of piecing together five attractive one-night screenshots.

Add the nights, then remove the correct amount

Imagine the nightly point prices are 40,000, 45,000, 55,000, 60,000 and 50,000. Together they total 250,000 points. Removing the lowest night, 40,000, leaves 210,000 points for the eligible reservation. Subtracting the last night's 50,000 would give the wrong result.

That also means the saving is not always exactly 20 percent of the total. It is 20 percent when every night's price is the same. With different prices, the reduction depends on the lowest night.

If you modify the dates or shorten the visit, get a fresh quote. The program can recalculate the whole stay and the night removed. Keep the new total with the new cancellation deadline. The benefit is useful for a five-night visit you want to take; it does not justify extra flights or meals simply to reach five nights.

For a ten-night visit, request the full eligible booking breakdown rather than doubling the saving from a five-night example. The prices and benefit application must be checked across the actual reservation. If an event changes only part of the stay, a single average nightly number can hide that effect. The checkout total is the amount your balance needs to cover.

A practical way to decide

Start with a room or flight you would be happy to buy with cash. Match the dates, traveler count and cancellation terms before comparing prices. A cheaper award that changes your plans is a different product. Give that change a cost instead of treating it as a free improvement.

For a points comparison, subtract the award's cash charges from the cash price you would otherwise pay. Divide that saving by the points used. This gives a useful measure of the booking in front of you. It is not a promise about what the same points will buy next month. Compare the result with the next realistic use of your balance.
