A Marriott Nightly Upgrade Award is a request for an eligible upgraded room or suite that can be confirmed before arrival. It is not an instant guarantee that any suite shown for sale will be yours. The property defines eligible room options and the program checks availability under its upgrade process.
Count every night in the reservation
Marriott requires one Nightly Upgrade Award per room per night for the entire stay. An eligible fifth night that costs no points under Stay for 5, Pay for 4 still needs an upgrade award. The room-price benefit and the upgrade request use different counts.
Read the request status rather than assuming the awards are confirmed when selected. Marriott's terms describe a check window before arrival, with brand-specific timing. If the request cannot be confirmed, the awards are returned subject to their expiry rules. A suite that is paid inventory may not be available through this process.
Make a plan that survives an unsuccessful request
Suppose a traveler has four upgrade awards and books five nights. Four awards do not cover that reservation, even if only four nights require points. Splitting the trip into separate bookings may create a different request, but it can also create a room move and different terms.
If a suite is essential for work, sleeping space or accessibility, price a room that meets those needs without relying on the request. A hypothetical $80 nightly difference over five nights is $400. That is the price of certainty in this example, not the value of an upgrade merely because it is a suite.
Keep the original room booked until the upgrade is confirmed and the confirmation is clear. Check award expiry against the stay dates. The program's request tool can add comfort, but the underlying room must still be suitable if the request does not clear.
A practical way to decide
An upgrade is worth planning around only when its status is clear. Keep a record of the room or cabin already booked, the requested upgrade and the point at which you will learn the result. That makes it easier to judge whether you can wait or need to buy more space now.
The base booking must work even if the upgrade does not clear. Check beds, occupancy, accessibility needs and the length of the trip. For a family, a confirmed room that fits everyone may be worth more than a larger room that remains a request. Do not cancel a suitable booking merely because an upgrade button appears in an account.
