The key detail in Amex UK's 40% Hilton transfer bonus is not just the rate. The standard points and bonus points can arrive at different times. If you need the full amount to book a room today, that gap can make the offer less useful than the headline suggests.
The official Amex UK transfer page says standard points transfer within five business days, while the additional bonus can take up to twenty business days. The offer runs through November 24, 2026, for eligible cardmembers. These are UK terms, not a promise for a US Membership Rewards account.
Calculate both arrival stages
The standard rate is two Hilton points per Membership Rewards point. The promotion adds 40%, producing 2.8 Hilton points in total. A 25,000-point Amex transfer therefore produces 50,000 standard Hilton points and 20,000 bonus points, for 70,000 in all.
If a room needs 70,000 points and you start with no Hilton balance, the first 50,000 do not complete the booking. The arithmetic works; the timing may not. I would not describe that room as secured until the reservation is confirmed.
Price a backup before committing
Check a cash rate with cancellation terms you can accept. If you reserve a backup, note the exact cancellation deadline and any deposit. Do not assume it will remain free to cancel throughout the possible bonus-posting window.
Our Hilton Points & Money guide helps compare points and cash, while our guide to Standard Room Rewards and free-night certificates explains why the room label matters. A points balance does not guarantee that a particular award category stays available.
Transfer for the actual shortfall
If you already have 20,000 Hilton points toward the hypothetical 70,000-point stay, the shortfall is 50,000. Divide that by 2.8, then round up to the permitted Amex transfer increment. Amex lists a 200-point minimum and increments of 50. Check the preview before submitting.
The transfer cannot be reversed back to Membership Rewards under the published terms. That is why I would avoid moving a large balance merely to chase the percentage. Keep enough flexibility for another hotel if the original room disappears.
Use a realistic cash comparison
Suppose the room you would otherwise book costs £280 and the award needs 70,000 Hilton points. With no award cash charge in this example, that is 0.4 pence per Hilton point. The 25,000 Amex points needed at the promotional rate would then avoid £280, or 1.12 pence per Amex point. Actual fees and cancellation differences must be added to a real comparison.
My view is that this bonus is useful for a planned Hilton redemption with enough timing flexibility. It is weaker for a scarce room that must be ticketed immediately. Check the room, the cash alternative and the posting rules together. The best transfer rate is only helpful when the resulting points arrive in time to do the job.
