Aeroplan’s flight-reward policy states that an itinerary involving eligible travel on a partner airline carries a CAD $39 partner booking fee per ticket. The fee is one part of the reward’s cash amount, alongside any other applicable charges.
Travelers should keep the currency visible. A Canadian-dollar fee and a US-dollar cash alternative cannot be combined accurately without a consistent conversion basis.
Record the complete award quote
Start with the total points, cash charges and currency displayed at checkout. The quoted total is more useful than a mileage headline that omits the payment needed to issue the ticket.
Suppose a hypothetical award needs 50,000 points and CAD $120 in cash charges, including the applicable partner fee. If the comparable cash ticket costs CAD $850, the saving is CAD $730.
Dividing CAD $730 by 50,000 points gives 1.46 Canadian cents per point. That is a Canadian-dollar calculation. Labeling it as 1.46 US cents would change the meaning of the result.
Use one currency for the comparison
If the traveler wants a US-dollar result, convert the cash amounts using the same stated exchange-rate basis. The rate and any payment conversion costs should be relevant to the actual comparison.
For illustration only, an assumed rate of US $0.75 per Canadian dollar converts CAD $730 to US $547.50. Dividing by 50,000 points produces approximately 1.10 US cents per point. The assumed rate is not a current exchange-rate quote.
The example shows why units matter. The points requirement has not changed, but the numerical cash value changes when the reporting currency changes.
Compare the itinerary, not only the fee
A partner itinerary may differ from an Air Canada option in schedule, cabin or connection. The useful decision includes those features along with the points and cash amounts.
Review the operating carrier on every leg and the cabin offered. A low points price can be less suitable if it adds an inconvenient connection or places the long flight in a different cabin from the one desired.
The selected reward fare’s flexibility should also be considered. An available price is only part of the commitment if the traveler expects to change dates later.
Keep the quoted total with the booking
Before transferring bank points, establish the live reward and the shortfall in the Aeroplan account. After booking, keep the ticket and payment confirmation as a reference for the actual currency and charges.
The partner fee is straightforward to include once the whole quote is recorded. Use the full cash total, retain its currency and compare an acceptable alternative. That produces a clearer award valuation than subtracting one fee in isolation or mixing amounts from different currencies.
Plan the rest of the journey
Use the Aeroplan calculator and program directory for broader rewards context. The calculator’s valuation is an estimate; the actual booking supplies the points required and cash charges. For the flight segment, Lounge Frog’s airline page and YYZ airport guide provide existing travel resources. Check the lounge directory separately: an award booking alone does not establish entry to every lounge.
