United’s 2027 Premier rules drop PQF targets and put 1K at 32,000 PQP

United’s October 13 update changes the status calculation from January, while a four-flight requirement remains. Separate next year’s plan from this year’s progress.

United will use Premier qualifying points, or PQP, as its status target from January 1, 2027. Its October 13 announcement lists 6,000 PQP for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum and 32,000 for Premier 1K. The airline removes the Premier qualifying flight targets, but still requires at least four United or United Express flights in 2027.

The 1K threshold is drawing strong reaction on X. The practical question is what the new calculation means for the travel you already expect to take. A change to next year's qualification plan does not erase this year's separate progress or turn every dollar on a trip into PQP.

Keep the qualification years separate

Create a new plan for activity in 2027. Keep the remaining 2026 flights in the existing plan and check the rules attached to that year. A short flight booked to meet an old target should not be justified by a target that no longer exists in the year you will fly it.

Use the MileagePlus program page for context. The United airline directory helps compare the carrier itself. Status can affect a journey without making an inconvenient departure the best choice.

Count what actually qualifies

Separate expected eligible flight earning from eligible card earning and any other qualifying source. Keep the four required United or United Express flights on the plan as their own condition. Do not replace that check with a list of partner flights merely because those flights may earn PQP.

United also says starter PQP in the new year requires an eligible card held by December 31, 2026 and qualification for 2027 Premier status. Check your own eligibility before putting that deposit into the budget. A general announcement is not confirmation that a particular account will receive it.

The United Club membership comparison is useful if lounge access is the main benefit you want. Read the Club-versus-Polaris explanation as well. A tier, a membership and a premium cabin should each be checked on their own terms.

Price the extra travel as a decision

Suppose a hypothetical plan leaves a traveler 2,000 PQP short of the tier they want. That gap is a reason to compare options, not a reason to assume any extra $2,000 purchase will solve it. Ask what the actual flight or eligible card activity would credit, and compare the added cost with benefits you would use.

Include the whole trip: ground transport, hotel nights and time away. Cruise Frog’s port directory can help when travel is tied to a sailing. Do not add a difficult connection simply to pursue a status number.

Remember that miles are a separate balance

PQP tracks status qualification. The miles used for a reward ticket have another purpose. Our mixed-cabin award guide and partner-upgrade eligibility guide explain two booking checks that still matter after a tier is earned.

United also announces dynamic PlusPoints pricing for travel from February 1, 2027. That reinforces the need to price an actual upgrade rather than planning from a fixed old number. Record the exact flight and terms when an upgrade is central to the trip.

For now, save the new thresholds and build a realistic 2027 travel outline. Let the trips you need drive the status calculation, then decide whether any remaining gap is worth closing.
