United MileagePlus miles get a 20% bonus on transfers to Marriott Bonvoy through Nov. 30

Premier Silver and higher members can turn 1,000 United miles into 1,200 Bonvoy points through Nov. 30. By most valuations, the miles are still worth more.

United MileagePlus members can now move miles into Marriott Bonvoy with a 20% bonus. Marriott's United partner page says eligible members "earn 20% bonus points when transferring United MileagePlus miles to Marriott Bonvoy points through 11/30."

That turns 1,000 United miles into 1,200 Marriott points. It is a rare bonus in this direction. Most points fans, though, will want to run the numbers before taking it.

The terms

United and Marriott have a partnership called RewardsPlus. Part of it lets elite United members convert miles into Bonvoy points. Here are the terms from Marriott's RewardsPlus FAQ and AwardWallet's write-up.

Per AwardWallet, transfers start at 500 miles, the names on both accounts must match, and points should post within 24 hours.

There is one detail where sources differ. Marriott's FAQ lists a cap of 50,000 miles per member per year for mile-to-point conversions. AwardWallet lists a cap of 200,000 miles per calendar year. If you plan a large transfer, check the limit shown in your United account first.

Why most people should skip it

The problem is value. United miles are usually worth more than Marriott points.

AwardWallet estimates that 1,000 United miles are worth about $21. The 1,200 Marriott points you would get back are worth about $11 by its numbers. Upgraded Points values United miles at 1.2 cents each and Marriott points at 0.7 cents each. By either measure, you lose value on a typical transfer, even with the bonus.

So this is not a way to make points. It is a way to move them when you need to.

When it could make sense

There are a few cases where the transfer can help:

  • You are a few thousand points short of a Marriott award night you want.
  • You have a small United balance you do not expect to use.
  • You have found a specific Marriott stay where your points stretch further than usual.

In each case, compare the cost in miles with what those miles could book on United or its Star Alliance partners. If the hotel night clearly wins, the 20% bonus softens the blow.

How RewardsPlus works the other way

RewardsPlus also lets Marriott points flow to United. Marriott points convert to United miles at 3:1, with a bonus of 10,000 miles for every 60,000 points, according to Marriott.

The partnership also links elite status. Marriott Titanium and Ambassador elites get United Premier Silver. United Premier Gold and above get Marriott Gold Elite.

Marriott has other point promos running now. Its buy points sale with up to a 55% bonus runs through Nov. 23. Amex Membership Rewards also has a 35% bonus on transfers to Marriott. Either may beat this one, so compare before you move miles. You can see every current offer on our transfer bonus page.

The bottom line

The 20% bonus is real, and it runs through Nov. 30. But United miles are usually the more useful currency. Only transfer if you have a clear use for the Marriott points.
