Qantas points can expire after 18 months without qualifying earning or spending. Qantas specifically explains that family transfers do not count as the activity needed to prevent expiry. Moving a balance to or from a relative is therefore not a substitute for checking the account's qualifying activity.
Review activity before moving points
Find the most recent qualifying earning or spending record and the expiry information in the account. An account login, a status display and a family-transfer entry should not be treated as equivalent to eligible activity. Use the program's own explanation for the action you plan.
If a partner purchase is meant to generate points, allow time for it to post. Keep the transaction record and confirm the point credit afterward. A purchase made at the last minute can leave little room to fix a missing entry.
A family booking can involve two separate checks
Imagine one traveler sends a small balance to a relative who plans to book a reward. That may help the relative fund the trip, but it does not by itself reset the sender's inactivity clock. Review the sender's remaining account and the recipient's booking separately.
The recipient should also search the intended reward before relying on a transferred balance. A combined amount is useful only if it can pay for a trip the family wants at terms they can accept. Include cash charges and the full traveler count.
Avoid an unnecessary purchase merely to preserve a modest balance. First identify its likely use and compare the preservation cost. A hypothetical balance replacing $25 on a planned purchase does not justify a $70 expense solely for activity.
Set a reminder early, check the qualifying record after it posts and retain evidence if a claim is needed. A simple review can protect useful points while respecting the difference between family sharing and account activity. The two features can work together in a travel plan, but they solve different problems.
A practical way to decide
An expiry review works best as a small calendar task. Record the date shown in the account, the action required to extend or use the balance, and the time it may take to post. Set your reminder early enough to deal with a missing credit. A receipt proves you made a purchase; it may not prove the program has credited the points.
Do not spend more than the balance is useful to save. First identify a reward you would use, then compare the cost of preserving the account with that reward's practical value. Small balances can still be handy, but a new trip or an unnecessary purchase can cost more than the points it protects.
