What was announced
Etihad Guest and Southwest Rapid Rewards will become partners in spring 2027, Etihad said in an announcement from Abu Dhabi on October 16. Etihad Guest members will earn miles on eligible Southwest flights and redeem them across Southwest's network in the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Rapid Rewards members will earn points on eligible Etihad flights and redeem them across Etihad's network. Both programs promise more detail closer to launch.
Southwest had already named Etihad, alongside Icelandair and China Airlines, in its October 15 program reset, which we covered in our Rapid Rewards 2027 piece. Etihad's statement adds the view from the other side and confirms the partnership is reciprocal.
For Rapid Rewards members
This is the first time Southwest points will buy a long-haul business class seat. Southwest's own awards are priced off the cash fare, which makes our Rapid Rewards calculator value a point at about 1.25 cents and keeps the ceiling low. Etihad awards are priced on a chart, and a Business seat between the US and Abu Dhabi can be worth several cents per mile at the right price. Whether Southwest members get that price depends on what Southwest publishes in spring: a fixed conversion into Etihad Guest miles, a partner award chart of its own, or dynamic pricing through Southwest's booking engine. The release does not say.
The practical question is whether redemptions will be bookable on southwest.com or require a call. Southwest has never had an airline redemption partner, and its systems were built for its own flights.
For Etihad Guest members
Southwest is the first US domestic network Etihad Guest members can earn and spend in. Etihad flies to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Washington and Toronto, with Calgary from October 25, and until now a Guest member landing at any of them had no partner to carry the onward leg on the same program. Our Etihad Guest calculator values a mile at about 1.2 cents; the test for a Southwest redemption will be whether the mileage price beats that against Southwest's cash fare.
Etihad Guest already has partners in American and others for North American earning, so for most members this is an addition rather than a replacement. The redemption side is what is new.
What is not announced
Three things decide whether the partnership is worth anything, and none has a number yet. Earning rates: partner earning is usually a fraction of what each airline pays on its own flights, and Southwest's fare bundles may earn differently. Status: nothing in either release says Etihad Guest tiers will earn tier miles on Southwest, or that Southwest's new Silver, Gold and Platinum levels will earn on Etihad. Lounges: Etihad Guest Gold and Platinum get Etihad lounges on Etihad flights, and there is no suggestion that extends to a Southwest ticket; Southwest's own lounges are not due until late 2027.
What to do now
Nothing, which is the honest answer. Do not transfer bank points into either program on the strength of the announcement; Rapid Rewards takes Chase transfers and Etihad Guest takes Amex, Capital One and Citi, and both will still be there in spring. If you fly Southwest often and hold Etihad Guest miles with no US use, the partnership gives those miles a home. If you hold Southwest points and want a long-haul business class seat, the award price in spring will tell you whether this was good news.
