The Points Frog [savings goal calculator](https://www.pointsfrog.com/savings-goal-calculator) works backward from the goal. You enter the amount, the date and what you have saved so far, and it finds the monthly deposit.\n\nFor $10,000 in three years, starting from nothing, the answer is $277 a month. That uses 0.37%, the FDIC's national average savings rate, published September 21, 2026. Interest adds only $54 over the three years.\n\nMove the same goal to a 4.25% high-yield account and the deposit falls to $262 a month. Interest covers $595 of the goal. That is a real gain, but your deposits still do almost all the work.\n\n[Try the calculator on Points Frog](https://www.pointsfrog.com/savings-goal-calculator)\n\n## The deposit for common goals\n\nAt the 0.37% national average, starting from $0:","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"htmltable","html":"<table><tr><th>Goal</th><th>12 months</th><th>24 months</th><th>36 months</th></tr><tr><td>$5,000</td><td>$416</td><td>$208</td><td>$139</td></tr><tr><td>$10,000</td><td>$832</td><td>$416</td><td>$277</td></tr><tr><td>$25,000</td><td>$2,080</td><td>$1,038</td><td>$691</td></tr><tr><td>$50,000</td><td>$4,160</td><td>$2,076</td><td>$1,382</td></tr></table>","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"Time is the biggest lever. Giving yourself two years instead of one cuts the deposit about in half. The rate matters much less over short spans. For $10,000 in one year, a 4.25% rate lowers the deposit only from $832 to $818.\n\n## Why interest matters so little\n\nThe balance is small for most of the time. A year at 0.37% earns $3.70 on $1,000 and $37 on $10,000. Even at 4.25%, $1,000 earns $42.50 a year. Interest counts for more on bigger balances and longer timelines.\n\nInterest is also taxable. The IRS counts bank interest as income, and a bank that pays you $10 or more in a year sends a Form 1099-INT. The calculator shows interest before tax. So for most short goals, the deposit is the lever that matters.\n\nMoney you already have helps more. Say you have $2,000 toward a $10,000 goal in 24 months at 0.37%. Your $2,000 grows to $2,015, leaving $7,985 to save, and the deposit is $332 a month. Without interest it would be $8,000 divided by 24, or $334.\n\n## A down payment example\n\nThe calculator has buttons for an emergency fund, a down payment, a vacation and a car. Only the down payment is figured from published numbers. The median first-time buyer put 10% down, according to the National Association of Realtors' 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. On the $417,500 median existing-home price in September 2026, that is $41,750.\n\nSaving it in three years takes about $1,154 a month at the national average, or $1,091 at 4.25%. By the same formula, interest supplies about $224 of the goal at 0.37% and about $2,484 at 4.25%. Closing costs are extra.\n\n## How it works and what it leaves out\n\nInterest compounds monthly at the rate that adds up to your APY over a year. Each deposit lands at the end of its month, so it starts earning the month after. The deposit shown is rounded up to the dollar, so it is never short.\n\nIf you can only save a set amount, enter it and the calculator shows the month you would reach the goal at that pace. It assumes your APY stays the same and nothing is lost to taxes or fees, while real savings rates move with the market. It is an educational estimate, not financial advice.\n\n## Where the rates come from\n\nThe 0.37% figure is the FDIC's national rate for savings accounts: an average across insured banks and credit unions, weighted by their deposits, published September 21, 2026. In the same table, money market accounts paid 0.63% and 12-month CDs 1.73%.\n\nThe 4.25% figure comes from Motley Fool Money's roundup of rates from the banks on October 8, 2026. The best accounts with no minimum balance or other conditions paid 4.25% to 4.34%, more than 11 times the national average. Savings rates are variable and can change after you open an account.\n\n## Use it on your own site\n\nThe savings goal calculator is free to embed on a blog or site with copy-and-paste code, and it carries no ads or tracking.
